The evening was a success, as the last one. Another proof of the need for a
goth club here in Oslo. A lot of new faces, which seemed to enjoy themselves.
The band, The Morendoes,
did a great gig. They
once again proved them self to be a live-band. We also got a great deal of press
coverage this time, e.g. Aftenposten (the biggest paper in Oslo) and the local
TV station Bootleg.
To avoid being to subjective, I have asked a friend of mine to do this
review. Over to you,
Darkamber:
After 2 hours of choosing my outfit, back combing and spraying my
hair and painting my face, I was finally ready for:
GOTHAM NIGHTS - PART 2: THE RESURRECTION
People stared wide eyed after me and K as we made our way to the
club. Such a sight had not been seen in Oslo since....well, since one month
ago when the first Gotham Nights took place.
We entered the club at slightly past 9 PM, and there was already
quite a few people there. The room was appropriately darkened; some candles
scattered around nearly the only source of light. The artificial smoke hung
heavy across the room - a bit too heavy at times, sometimes it got so dense
I had problems seeing my friends across the table!
The dance floor corner (tiny space!) was _very_ dark (no wonder, as
all the lamp's el cords had been filched...) and only randomly lit by long
periods of strobe light - the ultimate potential epilepsy test...(in fact
one girl fell over twitching in a corner, and was dragged outside and taken
away by an ambulance)
It was quite amusing watching people dance. The most popular dance
was Cast-a-Deadly-Spell-dance, where you stand in one spot, and wave your
arms mystically about while wearing a dead serious, haughty expression (and
trying very hard not to laugh yourself silly). No
Where-Did-I-Loose-My-Sunglasses-dance, though (you know, the
backwards-and-forwards walk).
At a nearby table we became after awhile aware of these 2 girls,
and a boy (in typical death-metal garb), who seemed to be having the
absolutely worst night in their entire miserable existence. They just sat
there the entire evening, unsmiling, not talking nor dancing, only leaving
the table for more beer. We decided they were either Pretentious Goths
(TM), had really horribly painful shoes (you've got to suffer a bit for
coolness...) _or_ they were Satanists (which is _still_ a big thing here
both in the media and among certain discontent youth (the
Rebels-without-a-Clue type...)). It turned out they were just
Satanists...how dull...
Then there were the three top hat men, who we had a hard time
trying to keep apart, as they also had the same style in beards and long
hair. *smile* Ah, yes...long haired men! - my favourite object, I mean
subject. What a delightful gathering of adorable, long haired men... *sigh*
There were even 2 boys with make-up - imagine: Norwegian boys with make-up!
I almost thought I was hallucinating. Though sorely tempted, I did abstain
from dragging anyone - screaming and kicking - home with me... *grin*
At the stroke of midnight the band began to play. The Morendoes
must be the only real gothic band in Norway, as far as I know. I had never
heard them before and was quite sceptical: a _Norwegian_ goth band, could
_that_ be any good, at all?
Well, I certainly got a _very_ positive surprise - they were really
good! In fact, I was impressed.
The Morendoes had a typical gothic sound along the lines of
Sisters of Mercy and Fields of the Nephilim. A massive, rich, dark sound
with depth and energy. Having 2 guitarists certainly added to the richness
of the sound.
Musically they could perhaps have been a bit more original, but as
musicians they made an impressive performance, and they played together
excellently. Some of the songs were really good, too. I really liked the
vocalist's voice - pity they can't keep him.
Oh, yeah, and the girls at our table all sighed over the band's
cute guitarist... *smile*
All in all, I guess that as a goth night in general, it might not have been
impressive, but since it was in our _own_ city, and the only Norwegian goth
club I've ever been to, it was Dead Brilliant! Meeting new goths you didn't
even know existed, and seeing acquaintances you didn't know actually were
goths was just wonderful.
I enjoyed myself immensely; we're really, really starved for any
gothic events here in Oslo, so being able to go to a goth night here was
pure heaven. Oh, joy, oh, bliss! If I should sum Gotham Nights up in one
single word, it must be: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Ha!
